Australian Curriculum ~ Science ~ R-6

The Australian Science Curriculum supports students to develop their scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and in the future to participate, if they so wish, in science-related careers.

Learning science is a valuable pursuit in its own right. Students can experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them. In doing this, they develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods.   (

At Eastern Fleurieu School Reception to Year 6, we aim for students to develop an interest in science as a means of expanding their curiosity, to ask questions and speculate on the changing world in which they live. Science teaching at EFS R-6 has a high degree of hands on, is activity and inquiry based.

Reception to Year 2 focus is an awareness of self and their connection to the local world.

Years 3 – 6 students develop their skills in questioning and recognizing those that can be investigated scientifically.

We aim for students to understand the nature of scientific inquiry and to be able to communicate their understandings and findings, to justify and develop their ideas while building a solid foundation of science knowledge. We need our students to understand historical and cultural contributions to science as well as contemporary science issues and activities.

Staff have been involved in on site Professional Development sessions using the Australian Science Curriculum.   Scientific Literacy has been a foci. It is important students understand scientific concepts, can read with understanding, age appropriate scientific texts, can question, explain, evaluate and make conclusions.

Staff have access to up to date training opportunities, latest teacher resources including Primary Connections teacher kits in addition to a large repository of equipment as well as use of web based interactive online resources at their fingertips.
